Is there a dedicated map / overlay available which shows the railway network(s) ?

I'm not aware of one - there is http://www.öpnvkarte.de/ which shows public transport in general. That includes railways but also bus routes and such like.

There is another one which you can use:

http://openptmap.de/

However, this one is only for Germany and it also shows other means of transport like buses.

Openstreetbrowser and OSMtransport are alternatives, although both have shortcomings - with Openstreetbrowser you're restricted to Europe and have to select the display of such data, while in OSMtransport you can only view on a city/county basis, as selected by someone who sets the view up.
