How can I create a map highlighting a single relation which then could be used for wikipedia articles?

Ideas:

  • show a relation of a river watershed on a topographic map (cyclemap)
  • show a relation of a railway line or European route on a map
  • show a relation of all harbours of a country on a map

You should not create "collection" relations (like "a relation of all harbours"). See Relations are not categories on the OSM wiki.

  1. Browse to where a member of the relation is on the map
  2. Click the blue/white '+' sign on the right-hand side of the map and check the 'Data' box (make sure you're zoomed all the way in).
  3. Click on the relation member in the map view and then click the 'Details' link in the box on the left.
  4. This will open a page describing the way. At the bottom of it, there will be a list of all the relations this way is a member of. Clicking on the name of the relation in that list will take you to the relation description page.
  5. On this page there is a map on the right-hand side under which are two links. Clicking on the 'View relation on larger map' will take you to a full-screen OSM map with the relation highlighted (something like this).

To export this map, just use the standard exporting methods (screenshot or the 'Export' tab) or use the 'Permalink' link at the bottom left.

Don't forget that embedding an OSM map in Wikipedia could potentially generate vast amounts of traffic which OSM is not funded to cater for. You should investigate using Wikimedia-owned servers for this. http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/OpenStreetMap is a starting point.

This works for showing the relation on a map, but exporting doesn't work. It just exports the map image, without the relation highlighted. Though taking a screenshot does work.

I would also like to be able to embed a map highlighting a relation, but the above answer doesn't work(anymore?). The 'share' tab will let me embed a map, while linking to the bigger map with the relation, but the embedded map doesn't have the relation shown at all.

It doesn't seem like openstreetmap.org/export/embed is able to do relations...how can we make it do that without getting all crazy and serving our own tiles?

@Nate_Wessel: That is what Vclaw said directly above you at 22 Jul '10, 16:07. You can take a (static) screenshot. Please ask in a new question (not in the answer box below) if you cannot find a similar already answered question (as this here is about Wikipedia and not necessarily about embedding). I reported the issue for the osm.org page as a bug. But there may be other options.
