Hi there, I'm new to OpenStreetMap and spent now several hours to find out how it works in if I can you use it. It looks cool, ... but one of my main applications I can not find a solution: I want to create a personal map, e.g. recording places I have been, or hiking I plan to go (which I want to show to some friends to ask if the come along), and also for work to record the office location of customers to find them next time ... Or, I used Google Map "My places" for this, which works fairly well, but I do not feel comfortable with. Obviously, all data with general interest should be made publicly available, and I of course will do and help to improve OSM - but things which or only important to me ... they should be saved somewhere else ... All I could find out is that I can download all the OSM data, set up a personal map server using Mapnik, add my data, rendering my tiles, or maybe using OpenLayers to combine several sources ... Well, this all looks far to complicated to me. The only thing I want to do is to draw on the map, save it somewhere (maybe even in a local kml-file or so), and show it (worst to load a kml-file from somewhere and overlay it onto the map). Am I totally wrong? Or any hints where I should start. Completely confused, Gilbert asked 27 Aug '12, 00:28 nounours77 Pieren |
Check this similar question and the link to Open MapQuest and their "My Maps" feature (which is currently not available at the moment I write this post). answered 27 Aug '12, 09:41 Pieren Pieren, Thank you very much for your answer!!! That's exactly what I look for. I think I tried also Open MapQuest last night, but I didn't get that it does what I look for. Hope this it will work soon again. Thanks, Gilbert

The My Maps feature on Open Mapquest has said "currently unavailable" whenever I have clicked on it. I have tried it a number of times over the past few months, I'm not sure if it has ever actually worked.
