I live in Kenya, where I am trying to add some 4x4 trails in National Parks. Many of the National Parks have markers at road junctions with numbers i.e. 'marker 4', 'marker 6'. We call them 'markers' or 'junction numbers'. People use these for navigation ('The lions are near junction number 7', or '100 meters after junction marker number 8', so I'd like to mark them in OSM. What is the best way to mark them? Thanks, Keir |

I guess marker= is a good fit. Put the number in ref=. I've seen information=guidepost used for this before, but the wiki says it's more about directions... |

After clicking a 'point' where I want it, where do I put 'marker=' and 'ref', are those 'fields' or 'tags'? If using iD editor, the answer to that question is 'yes'. If you create a field ref and set it to the #, you will see you have a tag ref set to that number listed below and making a tag should expand its equivalent field above the tags too; think of it as a nearly redundant way of expressing the same thing. The field can be more convenient to work with for individual and larger tags but the tags area groups them all together and presents them in a smaller space so you won't need to scroll so much as the number of created tags and their contents grows.
