There seems to be a proliferation of style sources for vector tiles such as OpenMapTiles. Is it possible to convert and leverage (and if so how) such styles for use with classic OSM image tile server using Mapnik and renderd?

I believe the answer is: no. Naturally given enough time, money and whatever it is probably possible to convert such styles, maybe even programmatically. However even if you could I doubt that it would make a lot of sense from a cartographic point of view as good Mapnik based styles tend to be far more refined than anything at least I've seen generated with mapbox-gl.
