I downloaded the zip file and expanded it on my desktop. How do I actually install the map onto my Garmin? asked 11 Mar '14, 21:42 ManoaManoa aseerel4c26 ♦ |
The most easy way if you only want the map on your GPS and not inside any Garmin software on your Mac: do not download the file for "MacOS", but instead osm_generic_gmapsupp.zip. See Garmin.OpenStreetMap.nl:Manual#Installing. Also see OSM_Map_On_Garmin#Installing_the_map_onto_your_GPS (you can usually just rename existing files, while keeping the file name extension). To install the "MacOS" download you need to use BaseCamp (a Garmin software), which may be the more complicated way. answered 11 Mar '14, 22:45 aseerel4c26 ♦ 3
Thanks! I used the generic gmapsupp.img file. When I put it in the /Garmin directory of the device, I couldn't see it. However, when I made a /Map directory at the main level and put it there; I saw it! Thanks much. btw, for the nuvi 2457, you have to go to Settings/Map&Vehicle/myMaps to see this new map.

ManoaManoa
@ManoaManoa: thanks for the feedback, this is helpful to others. All what you wrote is normal and mentioned on the two pages I have linked to. I have added your info about the OSM maps on this device to this wiki page. Feel free to add more details there (e.g. does routing work? address search?).

I tried this and still couldn't open the gmapsupp on the desktop. I have been trying for years to figure out how to load a basic OSM map without success.

@Rangerricsclan: there is nothing to be "opened". Download (maybe unzip) and copy to your Garmin storage. Done.

Presumably you're talking about something that you downloaded from http://garmin.openstreetmap.nl/ ?
Yes. I selected some tiles in Japan; had the system "build" my map; downloaded the zip file for Mac OS X; expanded it and got a lot of folders inside a folder. I'd like to know how to transfer this stuff onto my Garmin.
